イギリスの巡洋戦艦ライオン（HMS Lion）は、第一次世界大戦期のイギリス海軍を代表する巡洋戦艦であり、ライオン級のネームシップです。1910年に起工され、1912年に就役しました。当時としては非常に強力な戦力を有しており、主砲には13.5インチ（343mm）砲を8門搭載し、排水量は約26,000トン、最大速力は約27ノットを誇りました。
設計思想は、従来の巡洋戦艦以上の火力と装甲を兼ね備え、敵巡洋戦艦を圧倒するものでした。そのため「スプレンディッド・キャット（華麗なる猫）」の愛称で呼ばれ、ドイツ海軍からも警戒される存在でした。
ライオンは1915年のドッガー・バンク海戦に参加し、ドイツの巡洋戦艦デアフリンガーと交戦しました。この戦闘では中破しながらも帰還に成功し、艦隊の中核としての役割を果たしました。さらに、1916年のユトランド沖海戦にも参加し、旗艦として活躍しました。戦闘中には砲塔の被弾により大損害を受けましたが、沈没は免れました。
しかし、戦闘で被った損害や設計上の問題から、巡洋戦艦という艦種に対する批判も高まりました。装甲の薄さや弾薬庫防護の不備は、多くの巡洋戦艦の沈没要因となりました。
ライオンは戦後の1924年に退役・除籍され、ロンドン海軍軍縮条約の影響もあって解体されました。巡洋戦艦という発想の終焉を象徴する存在でもありましたが、海戦史においては大英帝国の海軍力を支えた名艦のひとつとして記憶されています。
The British battlecruiser HMS Lion was a representative warship of the Royal Navy during World War I and the lead ship of the Lion-class. She was laid down in 1910 and commissioned in 1912. At the time, she was an extremely powerful vessel, armed with eight 13.5-inch (343 mm) guns, with a displacement of about 26,000 tons and a top speed of approximately 27 knots.
Her design philosophy was to combine superior firepower and armor compared to earlier battlecruisers, allowing her to outmatch enemy battlecruisers. For this reason, she earned the nickname “The Splendid Cat” and was regarded with caution by the German Navy.
Lion participated in the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1915, where she engaged the German battlecruiser Derfflinger. Despite suffering heavy damage, she managed to return safely and fulfilled her role as a core ship of the fleet. She also served as a flagship during the Battle of Jutland in 1916, where she played a significant role. During the battle, she suffered severe damage from a turret hit but avoided sinking.
However, the damage sustained in combat and design flaws led to growing criticism of the battlecruiser concept itself. Weak armor and insufficient protection for magazines became key factors in the loss of many battlecruisers.
After the war, Lion was decommissioned and struck from the register in 1924. She was scrapped under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. While she symbolized the end of the battlecruiser era, she is remembered as one of the great ships that supported the naval power of the British Empire.
