HMS ヨーク（HMS York, D98）は、イギリス海軍の42型駆逐艦（Type 42）の最終グループに属する防空駆逐艦です。1982年のフォークランド紛争で得られた戦訓を反映し、後期型では船体を延長して凌波性や航洋性を改善。ヨークは1982年に起工、1985年に進水し、1987年に就役しました。
42型の最大の任務は艦隊防空で、艦首にはシーダート艦対空ミサイルの連装発射機を装備。その後方に4.5インチ単装砲を備えています。また、近接防御用としてファランクスCIWSや機関砲を搭載し、短魚雷発射管による対潜戦闘能力も有していました。艦尾には飛行甲板と格納庫を備え、リンクス艦載ヘリコプターを運用することができました。
最大の特徴は、艦橋上部に設置された大型の965型対空捜索レーダーです。幅広いアンテナは42型を象徴する装備で、後年にはより近代的な1022型レーダーへ換装されました。2本の煙突と前後に配置されたマスト、艦首のシーダート発射機が作り出すシルエットは、冷戦期の英国駆逐艦らしい独特の姿を形成しています。
ヨークは湾岸戦争をはじめ、冷戦終結後も各地での警戒・哨戒任務に従事し、2012年に退役。約25年間にわたって活動した、42型駆逐艦最後期を代表する一隻です。
HMS York (D98) was a Type 42 destroyer of the Royal Navy and belonged to the third and final batch of the class. Designed primarily as an air-defence destroyer, she incorporated improvements based partly on experience gained during the Falklands War. The Batch 3 ships featured a lengthened hull, providing improved seakeeping and better performance in rough seas. York was laid down in 1982, launched in 1985, and commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1987.
The Type 42’s principal role was fleet air defence. Its most distinctive weapon was the twin Sea Dart surface-to-air missile launcher mounted on the forecastle, with a 4.5-inch naval gun positioned immediately aft. York was also equipped with Phalanx close-in weapon systems, smaller-calibre guns and anti-submarine torpedo tubes. A flight deck and hangar at the stern allowed her to operate a Lynx helicopter for anti-submarine and surface warfare duties.
Another distinctive feature of the class was the large Type 965 air-search radar mounted above the bridge. Its broad antenna gave early Type 42 destroyers a particularly recognizable appearance. York was later fitted with the more modern Type 1022 radar as part of upgrades to her electronic and air-surveillance systems.
With her twin funnels, prominent masts and forward-mounted Sea Dart launcher, York retained the characteristic silhouette of a late Cold War Royal Navy destroyer. During her career she took part in numerous deployments, including operations associated with the Gulf War, and continued to serve in patrol and security missions after the end of the Cold War. HMS York was finally decommissioned in 2012 after approximately 25 years of service.
